Birth story of Lord Dattatreya
According to the legend, once all the three goddesses (Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvati ji) became proud of their loving religion. At that point Lord Vishnu created a leela. After this, Narada Muni visited the three people, approached Goddess Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvati ji and started praising Anusuya's husband's religion. On this, the three goddesses urged their husbands to test Anusuya's husband's religion. After this, Tridev, dressed as a Brahmin, reached the ashram of Maharishi Atri, at that time Maharishi Atri was not at his house. Seeing the three Brahmins, Anusuya came to them and proceeded to pay respects to them, but then the Brahmins said that they would not accept their hospitality until they would sit and take care of them on their lap.
On hearing this condition of the Brahmins, Anasuya became very worried and then she came to know the truth of the Brahmins with her tapobal. After remembering Lord Vishnu and her husband Atri, Anusuya said that if her husband's religion is true, then the three Brahmins should become 6-month-old babies. Anusuya made the three children infant with her tapobal and then took milk in her lap and kept all three in her cradle.
On the other hand, the three deities became worried about their husbands not coming back. Then Narada reached him and told the whole incident. After this, all the three ladies were very sorry for their actions. After this, the three goddesses apologized to Anusuya and requested to bring their husbands in the original form.
Then Anusuya brought the Tridevas to their former form from her Tapobal. After this, Tridev asked him to ask for a boon and then Anusuya demanded to get those three gods in son form. After this, Dattatreya was born from the womb of Mata Anusuya and hence it is said that by worshiping Lord Dattatreya, the blessings of the three gods are obtained.
