Vat Savitri Vrata Katha or Vat Savitri Vrata Katha (Kannada)

Vat Savitri is associated with Princess Savitri. Savitri was princess of Bhadra kingdom. She was very beautiful and when her father King Ashwapati could not find a suitable match for her, she went to forest to do austerities after taking permission from elders.

There was a prince by name Satyavan. He was living in forest as exile with his father. He fell in love with Savitri and both decided to marry. But when astrologers saw the maps they declared that this marriage is not favorable, if done the prince is destined to die within a year.

Savitri was shocked to know this. But she decided to marry Satyavan as she accepted him as her husband. They got married in forest and lived a decent life dedicated to Lord. Savitri began to develop great qualities of a chaste wife.

But the words of scriptures cannot be false. Exactly after one year Yamaraj came to snatch life of Satyavan while he was sleeping under a banayan tree, being tired of work. Savitri could see all this by virtue of chastity. She stopped Yamaraj from doing this and said that if he wants he could take her life.

She was ready to follow Yamaraj to Yamaloka for her husband’s life. Yamaraj was very pleased with Savitri’s devotion towards her husband. He left Satyavan alive and they both lived with devotion towards the Supreme Lord.
